How to Activate Boost Mobile, Step by Step (2026)

Updated August 2026

Activating Boost takes a few minutes once you have the right four pieces of information. Getting those four things is where people get stuck. Here’s the full checklist, plus what to do when activation stalls.

The short answer Activate at boostmobile.com/start or call the Activation Specialists at (866) 957-8278. If you’re keeping your existing number you need four things from your old carrier first: your account number, the account owner’s name, the account billing address, and a number transfer PIN. Most of these are on your latest bill. We checked this against Boost Mobile’s published support pages on August 5, 2026.

The pre-activation checklist

Boost’s own guidance, in the order that saves you the most time.

  1. Update your device software

First on Boost’s list. Carrier settings ride along with OS updates, so an out-of-date phone is a genuine activation failure point rather than a formality.

  2. Confirm the phone is compatible

Only if you’re bringing your own. See the compatibility section below.

  3. Confirm the phone is unlocked

Non-negotiable. Boost can’t activate a phone that’s still locked to another carrier, and it can’t unlock other carriers’ devices for you.

  4. Gather your porting info

Only if you’re keeping your number. Four items, listed below.

  5. Download the Boost Mobile app

You’ll need it for device setup and it’s where most self-serve tasks live afterwards.

Buying a phone from Boost and taking a new number? Then most of this doesn’t apply to you. Boost’s own words: you can activate now and don’t need to worry about the compatibility, unlock and porting steps. Skip to the activation section.

The four things you need to keep your number

If you’re porting a number in, Boost needs all four of these from your current carrier. Missing one stalls the whole thing.

WhatWhere to find it
Account numberYour latest bill from your current carrier
Account owner’s nameMust match the name on the account exactly, not a nickname
Account billing addressThe address on file with your old carrier, not necessarily where you live now
Number transfer PIN, sometimes called a port-out PINUsually requested from your old carrier directly. Most carriers make you call or generate it in an app.

Boost’s note here is useful: most of what you need is on your latest bill from your old carrier. If you can’t find it, or your carrier doesn’t send bills, call Boost’s activation specialists and they’ll help you work out what’s missing.

Don’t cancel your old service first This is the most expensive mistake in the whole process. A number can only be ported while the account it belongs to is still active. Cancel first and you can lose the number permanently. Start the transfer, let it complete, and the old line closes on its own.

Boost applies the same logic in reverse when people leave. Its own port-out page says not to cancel your line if you plan to transfer out, because lines cancel automatically once the transfer is done.

Is your phone compatible with Boost?

Boost’s rule of thumb is that most phones released in the last five years work fine. The specific examples it gives:

BrandBoost says
AppleiPhone XR or newer
SamsungGalaxy S20 or newer
Samsung foldablesGalaxy Z Flip, Z Fold or newer
GooglePixel 5 or newer
Compatible and eSIM-capable are two different bars Boost’s BYOD compatibility list starts at iPhone XR, but its eSIM list starts at iPhone 12. So an iPhone XR or iPhone 11 can absolutely join Boost. It just needs a physical SIM kit rather than an instant eSIM, which means waiting 3 to 5 business days for delivery instead of activating the same day. Worth knowing before you plan your switch around a same-day activation.

Is your phone unlocked?

To join Boost, your phone has to be unlocked. Phones are typically locked to the carrier you bought them from for a set period after purchase, or for as long as there’s a balance owed on the device. Phones bought directly from the manufacturer are often sold unlocked already.

Boost’s sequence for getting a phone unlocked by a previous carrier:

  1. Pay off the phone with your previous carrier

In their app or on their website. An outstanding device balance is the most common blocker.

  2. Confirm it’s actually unlocked

Check your previous carrier’s unlock policy. Paid off doesn’t always mean unlocked immediately.

  3. If it’s paid off and still locked, contact them

Only your previous carrier can unlock it. Boost is explicit that it can’t unlock devices from other carriers.

Boost’s timing estimate is worth planning around: unlocking usually takes a few hours, but sometimes a few days. So don’t start this the morning you need your new line working.

Activating the line

Two routes, and they’re equivalent.

Online: go to boostmobile.com/start and follow the flow.

By phone: call the Activation Specialists on (866) 957-8278, open 8 a.m. to midnight ET every day. This is a dedicated team, separate from general Customer Care, and Boost positions them as real people who’ll walk you through the whole switch. If you’re at all unsure about the porting details, calling is the lower-risk option.

Boost says activation itself takes just a few minutes in most cases.

Activating a watch or tablet instead? Boost keeps separate instructions for Apple Watch and iPad activation, because the flow is different from a phone. Don’t try to follow the phone steps for those.

After you’re activated

Four setup tasks that Boost groups together as finishing the job. None are mandatory, all are the kind of thing you’ll wish you’d done when you need them.

TaskWhy bother
Set up voicemailBoost has both visual voicemail and traditional voicemail guides
Update carrier settingsKeeps network behaviour current
Set up Wi-Fi callingiPhone: Settings, Cellular, Wi-Fi Calling. Android: Settings, Connections, Wi-Fi Calling. Genuinely useful if your home signal is weak.
Set your 4-digit security PINSettings then Security in the app. You’ll need it before any support call or insurance claim, and setting it now beats sorting it out during a problem.

Android users: install the Boost Config app. Boost tells Android customers to use it to keep network settings up to date, and it’s easy to miss because it doesn’t come up in general Android advice.

For reference, US Mobile activation takes about two minutes on an eSIM-capable phone.

When activation fails

Work through these in order.

Software out of date. Update and retry. It’s first on Boost’s own pre-activation list because it genuinely causes failures.

Phone still locked. The most common hard blocker. Only your previous carrier can fix it, and there may still be a device balance owed.

Porting details don’t match. The account owner’s name and billing address have to match your old carrier’s records exactly. A shortened first name or an address you’ve since moved from will fail the check. This is the most common cause of a port that starts and then stalls.

Wrong PIN. Transfer PINs sometimes expire, depending on the carrier that issued it. If yours has been sitting around for a while, get a fresh one.

Not on the eSIM list. If you’re trying to activate via eSIM and the model isn’t supported, you need a physical SIM kit instead.

If you’re still stuck, the Activation Specialists on (866) 957-8278 are the right team, not general Customer Care. They can see what the port is failing on, which you can’t.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I activate Boost Mobile?

Activate online at boostmobile.com/start, or call the Boost Activation Specialists on (866) 957-8278, open 8 a.m. to midnight ET daily. Update your device software first. If you are bringing your own phone, confirm it is compatible and unlocked, and if you are keeping your number, have your old account number, the account owner’s name, the billing address and a number transfer PIN ready.

What do I need to transfer my number to Boost Mobile?

Four things from your current carrier: your account number, the account owner’s name, the account billing address, and a number transfer PIN, sometimes called a port-out PIN. Most of this appears on your latest bill. Do not cancel your old service first, because a number can only be transferred while the account is still active.

How long does Boost Mobile activation take?

Boost says activation takes just a few minutes in most cases. The parts that take longer are getting a phone unlocked by a previous carrier, which Boost says usually takes a few hours but sometimes a few days, and waiting for a physical SIM kit, which takes 3 to 5 business days after shipping.

Which phones are compatible with Boost Mobile?

Boost says most phones released in the last five years work, and names iPhone XR or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, Galaxy Z Flip or Z Fold or newer, and Google Pixel 5 or newer. The phone must also be unlocked. Note that eSIM support starts later, at iPhone 12, so an older compatible phone needs a physical SIM.

Does my phone need to be unlocked to join Boost Mobile?

Yes. Boost cannot activate a phone that is still locked to another carrier, and it cannot unlock other carriers’ devices for you. Pay off any remaining device balance with your previous carrier, confirm the unlock through their policy, and contact them directly if the phone is paid off but still locked.

Should I cancel my old plan before switching to Boost Mobile?

No. A phone number can only be transferred while the account it belongs to is still active, so cancelling first risks losing your number permanently. Start the transfer with Boost and let it complete. Your old line closes automatically once the port finishes.

Why did my Boost Mobile activation fail?

The most common causes are out-of-date device software, a phone still locked to a previous carrier, porting details that do not exactly match your old carrier’s records, an expired transfer PIN, or trying to use eSIM on a model that is not on Boost’s supported list. Call the Activation Specialists on (866) 957-8278, who can see what the port is failing on.
