Here’s how to activate an eSIM on any phone in about two minutes, with zero trips to a store, plus how to set one up free on US Mobile. New to all this? Start with what an eSIM card actually is.
What you need before you activate an eSIM
Not much, honestly. Three things and you’re set:
- An eSIM-compatible phone (most phones from 2020 on qualify; check the full device list if you’re unsure).
- A Wi-Fi connection. eSIM profiles download over the internet, so you don’t need a working cellular signal yet.
- Your activation details from the carrier: usually a QR code, sometimes a manual code, or an in-app “activate” button.
One thing worth knowing up front. On most 2022-and-newer iPhones sold in the US, there’s no physical SIM tray at all, so eSIM isn’t really optional. It’s the only way to get a line on the phone. That sounds limiting but it actually makes activation faster, which we’ll get to.
How to activate an eSIM on iPhone
If your carrier supports eSIM Quick Transfer or sends a QR code, this takes under two minutes.
Connect to Wi-Fi
Settings > Wi-Fi. The eSIM downloads over the network, so a solid connection matters more than signal here.
Open the eSIM setup screen
Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service) > Add eSIM.
Scan your QR code
Choose “Use QR Code” and point the camera at the code your carrier gave you. Not sure where to find it? Here’s how to get and scan your eSIM QR code. No code? Pick “Enter Details Manually” and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code instead.
Confirm and label the line
Your iPhone downloads the profile. Give it a label (“Personal”, “Travel”) so you can tell lines apart if you run two.
Set your default line
Pick which line handles calls, texts, and data. You can change this anytime, and you can switch on the fly per contact.
That’s it. The line goes live in a few minutes. If you’re moving from an old iPhone, Apple’s Quick Transfer can move the eSIM over Bluetooth without a QR code at all. Switching phones in general? Here’s how to move your eSIM to a new phone.
How to activate an eSIM on Android (Pixel and Samsung)
Android wording varies a little by brand (we go deeper in our Android and Samsung eSIM guide), but the path is basically the same.
Get on Wi-Fi
Same reason as iPhone. The profile comes down over the internet.
Open the SIM settings
On Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM. On Samsung Galaxy: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM.
Choose “download a SIM instead”
When it asks you to insert a physical SIM, skip that and pick the download option.
Scan the QR code
Point the camera at your carrier’s code, or enter the activation code by hand if you don’t have one.
Turn the eSIM on
Toggle the new line on, set it for calls and data, and you’re connected.
How to activate a US Mobile eSIM (and try it free)
If you don’t have a plan yet, this is the easy way to test eSIM on a real network before you pay anything. The free trial gives you 30 days and 30GB of data on Warp 5G or Dark Star. You’ll add a payment method to start, but you aren’t charged during the trial, and there’s no contract if you walk away.
Start at get-started
Go to usmobile.com/get-started and create an account or log in.
Add a new line, then Special Offers
Choose “Free Trial” and continue.
Pick eSIM activation
Skip the physical Starter Kit and select eSIM so there’s nothing to wait for in the mail.
Choose your network
Select Warp or Dark Star. You get access to all three of US Mobile’s nationwide networks on paid plans, but the trial runs on these two.
Transfer your number and activate
The trial asks you to bring your existing number over. Confirm, then scan the QR code with your camera. Your line is live in a few minutes.
Paid plans start at $8/mo for light users and $25/mo for Unlimited Starter, all with eSIM, no activation fee, and no contract. Annual billing drops those further.

Start your free trialFrequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to activate an eSIM?
About two minutes for the download and setup. If you’re porting a phone number from another carrier, the full transfer usually finishes within roughly 15 minutes.
Can I activate an eSIM without Wi-Fi?
It’s strongly recommended. The eSIM profile downloads over the internet, so Wi-Fi is the reliable way to do it. If your phone already has a working data line, you can sometimes activate a second eSIM over cellular, but Wi-Fi is the safe bet.
Do I need a QR code to activate an eSIM?
Usually, but not always. Many carriers send a QR code you scan in your phone’s settings. Some let you activate inside their app or with a manual activation code instead. On iPhone, Apple’s Quick Transfer can even move an eSIM from your old phone with no code at all.
Can I try an eSIM before paying for a plan?
Yes. US Mobile offers a free 30-day eSIM trial with 30GB of data on the Warp 5G or Dark Star network. You add a payment method to start but aren’t charged during the trial, and there’s no contract.
