What Is RCS, and Why Have iPhone Users Been Waiting?
RCS (Rich Communication Services) brings a whole new level of messaging to your default text app. Think of it as the best of iMessage, but for texts that go to Android users too.
With RCS, you get:
- Typing indicators
- Read receipts
- High-resolution photo and video sharing
- Reactions and better group chats
- More secure messages with end-to-end encryption in supported chats
Android users have had RCS for a while, but iPhones were limited to old-school SMS when messaging across platforms. Starting with iOS 18, Apple quietly rolled out RCS support—but it wasn’t available for most MVNO customers.
That changes today.
iOS 18.5 Unlocks RCS for US Mobile Customers on Dark Star
With the launch of iOS 18.5, RCS is now fully supported for iPhone users on our Dark Star network.
If you’re already on Dark Star, all you need to do is update your iPhone and turn RCS on in your settings. No extra setup or apps required.
This is a major win for iPhone users who text with friends or family on Android. Now those messages are more dynamic, secure, and modern than ever.
Why This Is Big for US Mobile Customers
Our customers have been asking about RCS for months, and we’ve been working hard to make it happen. The moment Apple made it possible, we made sure Dark Star delivered the full RCS experience right away.
So what can you expect?
- Messages between iPhone and Android users will now include features like read receipts, typing indicators, and better group messaging. Check it out!

See when your contact is typing in real time.

And of course, see their read receipts (if enabled).

Additionally,
- Photo and video sharing will be clearer and faster.
- Conversations just feel smoother—because they are.
This is exactly what messaging should look like.
How to Turn On RCS on Your iPhone
It only takes a minute to get set up:
- Update your iPhone to iOS 18.5
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the update if you haven’t already. - Turn on RCS messaging
Go to Settings > Messages and toggle on RCS Messaging
That’s it. You’re ready to send richer, better messages.
The Future of Messaging Feels a Lot Closer
This update brings something iPhone users have wanted for years: the ability to text Android users with the same great features you get with iMessage.
We’re proud that US Mobile customers on Dark Star can finally experience. We knew this was a long time coming (and some of you did too!) and we’re glad you can finally use it.
If you’re already on Dark Star, go check it out. And if you’re not—this is a great time to learn more about our networks and plans. You’ll see why so many people are making the switch.
