How To Transfer Your Google Fi Number to a new carrier (2024)

How To Transfer Your Google Fi Number to a new carrier (2024)

Looking to switch carriers (away from Google Fi) but want to keep the same phone number you’ve always had? You’re in the right place. Transferring your phone number is easy and only takes 5-10 minutes.

Carriers might refer to this process as “porting”, “transferring”, “number transfer”, “switching”, or even “moving your number.” No matter the lingo used, it’s all the same thing: bringing your current number to your new service.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to seamlessly transfer your current number to your new carrier.

So, how do I transfer my Google Fi number to another carrier?

Transferring your Google Fi number to a new carrier is straightforward and can be completed in just a few steps. Here’s how you can do it:

Step 1: Check Eligibility

Ensure your Google Fi number is eligible for porting. All active mobile numbers should be eligible, but it’s a good idea to verify this beforehand. Important: If you pause the Google Fi service while you transfer your number to another carrier, it may cause the port-out to be unsuccessful.

Step 2: Gather Necessary Information

You’ll need the following details from your Google Fi account to initiate the port:

  • Account Login: Username and Password
  • Address: The address found on your current bill.
  • Account Number: You can find this in the top right corner of your bill or in your online account portal.
  • Password or PIN: This is the security PIN associated with your Google Fi account. To obtain your port-out PIN from Fi, you must follow the steps below in Step 3.
    • Note on your Number Transfer PIN Your number transfer PIN is created by Fi at your request. It is not your current security PIN on your account or the security code used to access your phone.

Step 3: Obtain Your Number Transfer PIN

Start by cancelling your Google Fi service

  1. Open the Google Fi app or website.
    • Tip: For iOS users, you can only cancel the service through the Fi website.
  2. In the “Account” tab, select Manage plan.
  3. Select Leave Google Fi.
  4. To confirm cancellation, follow the guided steps.
  5. Select Transfer your number to another carrier.
  6. Get your port-out number and PIN.

Step 4: Choose Your New Carrier

Select US Mobile as your new carrier and proceed to their website or app to start setting up your new plan.

Step 5: Provide Information and Documentation

During the setup process, you’ll be asked if you want to bring over your current phone number. You’ll need to provide the information gathered in Steps 2 and 3. This includes your current phone number, your current carrier, your carrier account number, and lastly your number transfer pin.

  1. Provide your new carrier your port-out number and PIN.
  2. Use the name on your Google Account and your Google Fi service address.
  3. To transfer your number, your new carrier confirms your information with Google Fi.
  4. After your new carrier activates your number, your Google Fi service stops.

Step 6: Porting Date and Time

The porting of a number can generally take around 24-48 hours, depending on how cooperative your previous carrier is. In certain instances, it can be longer for VoIP or landline numbers, which can take up to 7-10 business days. This is because it’s up to your previous carrier (in this case, Google Fi) to release your number. While they are required to release it, we can’t confirm the amount of time it takes them to do so.

Step 7: Await Confirmation

Once you’ve provided all the necessary information and continued through the activation flow of your new carrier, keep an eye on your inbox for confirmation.

Step 8: Enjoy Your New Service

Once the porting process is complete, you’ll be able to enjoy your new carrier with your existing phone number. You did it!
