What Makes a Phone Plan “Best” in 2026

The phone plan market hasn’t gotten simpler. There are roughly two dozen carriers serving the US, three underlying networks, and pricing that ranges from $0/mo (ad-supported) to $120/mo (top-tier postpaid). The “best plan” label gets thrown around a lot. Here’s what we actually weighted when picking winners.

Network choice and quality

Until recently, most MVNOs gave you the cheaper price of a major carrier’s network and that was the trade. You picked your carrier, you got their footprint. US Mobile changed that by offering access to all three major US wireless networks on a single plan, branded as Warp 5G, Dark Star, and Light Speed. You can pick the one that works best in your area without switching carriers.

For quality, we lean on named third-party reports rather than carrier marketing. Per Ookla’s Q4 2025 Speedtest analysis, T-Mobile led 5G availability across most US states surveyed. OpenSignal’s 2025 US Mobile Network Experience reports track download speed, upload speed, video experience, and 5G reach by region. Use those if you want to read deeper.

Total cost, not just the headline price

Big 3 carriers advertise prices that require autopay enrollment, then add taxes and fees at billing. Prepaid carriers usually bake taxes in but may charge upfront for a year to hit their lowest rate. The number to focus on is what actually leaves your account every month. A “$15/mo” plan that requires $180 upfront and renews at $30 is a $30 plan after year one.

That’s why our category winners cite the regular monthly price first, with annual or promo rates shown as secondary. The cheapest sticker price isn’t always the cheapest plan over 24 months.

Hotspot and data deprioritization

Most “unlimited” plans are actually unlimited talk and text with capped or deprioritized data. Deprioritization means your traffic gets slowed during network congestion. Big 3 entry tiers (Verizon Unlimited Welcome, T-Mobile Essentials, AT&T Value 2.0) deprioritize after a threshold; their premium tiers don’t. MVNO plans on the same underlying networks are typically deprioritized behind postpaid customers regardless of tier.

Hotspot data is similar. Some plans include none, some include a fixed cap (10–60 GB), and a few include unlimited hotspot. If you use your phone to tether laptops or tablets, this matters more than the underlying data allowance.

Customer service when something breaks

The thing nobody thinks about until they need it. Big 3 carriers have 5,000–9,000 retail stores. T-Mobile and Verizon offer phone, chat, and in-person support. MVNOs vary: Cricket has ~4,500 stores; Metro has ~8,000; Consumer Cellular sells through ~4,000 Target locations; Mint, Visible, and US Mobile are online-first. Visible doesn’t offer phone support at all. US Mobile offers chat, phone, and email but no retail. We factored support model into category picks.

What’s optional vs essential

Streaming bundles (Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+) are nice but they’re not load-bearing for “best plan.” They’re worth $10–$15/mo if you’d subscribe anyway, $0 if you wouldn’t. International features matter to about a quarter of users (travel, expat families). Hotspot matters more if you work remotely from places without Wi-Fi. The “best” plan for you depends on which of these you actually use.

How We Evaluated These Phone Plans

Pricing and feature data was pulled directly from each carrier’s published plan pages and verified as of June 9, 2026. For network coverage and quality claims, we cite named third-party sources: Consumer Reports for customer satisfaction, Ookla’s Speedtest reports for speed and 5G availability, and OpenSignal for reliability metrics. FCC wireless resources and reviews from Tom’s Guide, CNET, and Wirecutter were referenced for cross-checks.

Category winners were scored on five axes: price (entry and top-tier), feature density at that price, network access flexibility, contract obligations, and customer service signals (app ratings, support channels, retail footprint). Same-tier comparisons were enforced throughout: prepaid against prepaid, postpaid against postpaid. The equivalents catalog handled cross-tier mapping in the savings table.
