Boost Mobile eSIM and SIM Cards: The Full 2026 Guide

Updated August 2026

Boost supports both eSIM and physical SIM, and which one you get depends entirely on whether your phone is on Boost’s supported list. Here’s the full list, how each install works, and what dual SIM actually gets you.

The short answer Boost Mobile supports eSIM on all U.S. iPhone models from iPhone 12 and newer, most Samsung Galaxy S22 through S26 and Z Flip and Fold models, recent Motorola and Google Pixel models. If your phone is on that list you can activate immediately. If not, Boost ships a SIM kit containing all three physical sizes. We checked this against Boost Mobile’s published support pages on August 5, 2026.

eSIM vs physical SIM, in plain terms

A physical SIM is the little chip you slot into the phone. An eSIM is the same information, stored digitally on a chip already built into your handset. Nothing to insert, nothing to lose.

Wait for deliveryNo, activate right awayYes, 3 to 5 business days
Can be stolen with the phoneNo, can’t be removedYes, can be pulled out
Two numbers on one phoneYes, multiple eSIMsOne per slot

Boost’s own framing of the security angle is fair: with an eSIM, nobody can swipe it if your phone goes missing.

Boost says activation takes just a few minutes in most cases, whichever type you use. The real time difference is shipping. An eSIM starts working the moment you finish signing up. A physical SIM kit has to arrive first.

Two things worth noticing about this list Boost’s eSIM cutoff for iPhone is the iPhone 12, which is later than some carriers. And Boost’s general BYOD guidance is broader than its eSIM list: for bringing a phone at all, Boost says most phones from the last five years work and names iPhone XR or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer, and Pixel 5 or newer. So an iPhone XR can join Boost. It just needs a physical SIM rather than an eSIM.

Installing your Boost eSIM

Boost keeps a separate install guide for each manufacturer, because the menus differ. The five are iPhone, Samsung, Motorola, Google and TCL.

Pick the guide that matches your phone rather than following a generic one. Android eSIM menus are genuinely inconsistent between brands, and this is the kind of task where following instructions written for a different manufacturer wastes real time.

Two things to get right before you start:

  1. Update your software first

Boost lists this as a pre-activation step. eSIM handling improves across OS versions and an out-of-date phone is a common failure point.

  2. Be on Wi-Fi

You’re downloading a profile. If your only connection is the cellular line you’re about to change, that gets awkward.

If you need a physical SIM

Every Boost Mobile SIM Kit contains all three sizes: nano, micro and standard. So you don’t need to work out which one your phone takes before ordering. One kit fits whatever you’ve got.

Shipping, if you’re ordering a SIM kit on its own, is UPS Ground and usually arrives in 3 to 5 business days after it ships. Orders placed before 2 p.m. ET can ship same day, though processing can take up to 72 hours excluding weekends and holidays. Boost can’t deliver to a P.O. Box, so you need a street address.

If you lose the original SIM from an old phone, Boost’s advice is to contact Customer Care or visit a Boost Mobile store rather than sourcing one yourself.

What dual SIM actually gets you

Dual SIM means two active phone numbers on the same handset at the same time. The two genuinely useful cases:

Separating work and personal. Two numbers, one phone, no second device in your pocket. You can label each line, set which number is the default for calls and which for data, and set per-number preferences.

Travel. Keep your US number active for calls and texts while adding a local data plan in the country you’re visiting. This is the single best argument for eSIM over physical SIM, because adding a travel line takes minutes instead of finding a shop.

Boost publishes step-by-step guides for managing dual SIM on your specific device.

For reference, US Mobile supports eSIM activation on iPhone XS and newer.

Moving your Boost line to a new phone

There’s one non-obvious step here that trips up nearly everyone with a new iPhone.

When you set up the new iPhone, it will offer to transfer your cellular settings or set up an eSIM as part of the standard onboarding flow. Boost tells you to skip those prompts. Select SKIP. The line move gets handled in the Boost Mobile app instead, not by iOS.

Then, on either platform:

  1. Finish the normal phone setup

Apps, photos, data. Just not the cellular part on iPhone.

  2. Download and sign into the Boost Mobile app

  3. Go to Settings, Device Setup, Manage under the right line, then Change Phone

  4. Android with a physical SIM: move the SIM across

Take it out of the old phone and put it in the new one. If the original is gone, that’s a call to Customer Care or a store visit.

Don’t let iOS set up the eSIM during onboarding It looks like the helpful thing to do and it’s the one step Boost specifically tells you to decline. Let the Boost app handle Change Phone instead, or you can end up with a half-configured line and a support call.

When it won’t activate

Three things account for most eSIM activation failures.

The phone isn’t actually unlocked. To join Boost your phone has to be unlocked, and phones stay locked to the carrier you bought them from for a set period, or while there’s money owed on the device. Phones bought direct from the manufacturer are often already unlocked. Check with your previous carrier if you’re unsure.

The model isn’t on the eSIM list. Being a recent phone isn’t the same as being on Boost’s supported list. Check the table above. If it’s not there, you need a physical SIM, and that’s fine.

Software is out of date. Update, then retry.

If none of that resolves it, the Activation Specialists line is (866) 957-8278, staffed 8 a.m. to midnight ET every day. That’s a different team from general Customer Care and it’s the right one for this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Boost Mobile support eSIM?

Yes. Boost Mobile supports eSIM on all U.S. iPhone models from iPhone 12 and newer, most Samsung Galaxy S22 through S26 and Z Flip and Fold models, Galaxy A series models including the A54 5G and A16 5G, recent Motorola razr and moto g models, Google Pixel 9a and the Pixel 10 series, the Boost Celero5G TAB, and two TCL models.

Which iPhones work with Boost Mobile eSIM?

Boost Mobile supports eSIM on all U.S. iPhone models from iPhone 12 and newer. Older iPhones can still join Boost using a physical SIM. Boost’s general compatibility guidance names iPhone XR or newer for bringing your own device.

What size SIM card does Boost Mobile use?

You do not need to choose. Every Boost Mobile SIM Kit includes all three sizes, nano, micro and standard, so one kit fits whatever your phone takes.

How long does a Boost Mobile eSIM take to activate?

Boost says activation takes just a few minutes in most cases. The advantage over a physical SIM is that there is nothing to ship, so if your device is on Boost’s supported eSIM list you can activate immediately after signing up. A physical SIM kit takes 3 to 5 business days to arrive after shipping.

Can I have two phone numbers on one phone with Boost Mobile?

Yes, using dual SIM. It lets you run two active numbers on the same device at once, which is useful for separating work and personal lines or adding a local data plan while travelling. You can label each line and set which number is the default for calls and for data.

How do I move my Boost Mobile line to a new iPhone?

Set up the new iPhone as normal but select SKIP for any prompt about transferring cellular settings or setting up eSIM. Boost handles the line move in its own app instead. Download and sign into the Boost Mobile app, then go to Settings, Device Setup, Manage under the correct line, and tap Change Phone.

Why won’t my Boost Mobile eSIM activate?

The three most common causes are that the phone is still locked to a previous carrier, that the model is not on Boost’s supported eSIM list even though it is recent, or that the software is out of date. If none of those is the issue, call the Boost Activation Specialists on (866) 957-8278, open 8 a.m. to midnight ET daily.
