How to find your IMEI in 3 easy steps (Apple and Android)

Looking for your IMEI code? Watch the short tutorial above or read on for a quick step-by-step guide.

Okay, you might be asking yourself: “What’s an IMEI?” I’ll admit, when I started at US Mobile I had to research this for myself (don’t tell my boss). But don’t worry – I’ve done the research and have all of your answers below… like an IMEI genie of sorts.

What does IMEI mean?

So what is it? IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. Think of it as your phone’s personal identifier — it’s a 15-digit number unique to every device on the market. Phone carriers and manufacturers share IMEI numbers to enable tracking of smartphones that may be stolen or compromised. No two devices have the same IMEI, which is why it can be helpful to know.

For clarity: IMEI is not your SIM number. The SIM is associated with the network, while the IMEI is associated with the device itself.

However, if your device supports eSIM compatibility, you might have more than one IMEI (typically noted as IMEI 1 and IMEI 2). Additionally, if you’re looking to port your number, you might want your IMEI on hand.

How do I find my IMEI Number?

  • Apple iPhone (iOS)
    • Open Settings → Tap General → Tap About → Scroll to the bottom of the page and look for IMEI.
    • Open Phone → Dial *#06# on your keypad → View IMEI
  • Android and Google devices:
    • Open your phone’s Settings app → Tap About phone → Scroll to view your IMEI.
    • Open Phone → Dial *#06# on your keypad → View IMEI

Can you find your IMEI without your phone?

Yes! There’s two ways to find your IMEI if you have damaged or lost your phone:

  1. If you still have the box it came in, you can locate it there.
  2. If you don’t have the box, no sweat! Using your phone’s tracker service (Apple’s Find My or Google’s Find My Device) you can find your IMEI using your computer or another device. Here’s how:
    1. Apple – Find My iPhone Login with your Apple ID on appleid.apple.com.
      1. Scroll down till you see “Devices” on the left side of your screen
      2. Press “View Details”.
      3. Select the device.
      4. A box will pop-up with the following details:
        • Model
        • Version
        • Serial Number
        • IMEI
Note: You have to login with the Apple ID that the device is linked to.
    2. Google – Find My Device Login with the Google account associated with the device you’re looking for.
      1. At the top left of the device list, tap your phone.
      2. Tap Information
      3. View your IMEI and other important ID numbers

Is my IMEI number unlocked?

Wanting to see if your phone is unlocked? Head to your current carrier’s website and use their IMEI checker. Simply type in your IMEI and press “submit.” Yes, it really is that easy.

Not able to find their IMEI checker? No worries! Just reach out to their customer support and they can answer any questions you have relating to your IMEI/unlocked status/contract, etc.

In conclusion, finding your IMEI number is a straightforward process whether you have your phone or not. This unique identifier is essential for various reasons, such as tracking a lost or stolen phone, checking if your phone is unlocked, or porting your number. If you encounter any difficulties or have specific questions about your IMEI, don’t hesitate to reach out to your phone carrier’s customer support.
