Apple Watch User Guide: Setup, Cellular and Everyday Help

Apple already publishes a thorough manual for the watch itself. What it doesn’t do is walk you through the messy bits around it: getting a line on the watch, which carrier does what, setting one up for a kid who doesn’t have an iPhone, or figuring out why cellular stopped working on a Tuesday afternoon.

That’s what this Apple Watch user guide is for. It’s organised by the job you’re trying to get done. Each section gives you the short answer, then points to the full walkthrough. For anything about the watch’s own apps and settings, Apple’s official Apple Watch User Guide is the best reference, and we link to it rather than repeat it.

Set up a new Apple Watch

Setup happens from an iPhone. Turn the watch on, hold it near your iPhone, and follow the prompts in the Apple Watch app; if the prompt doesn’t appear on its own, open the app and start pairing from there. The whole thing takes a while, mostly waiting for the watch to update, so do it somewhere with Wi-Fi and a charged phone.

Add cellular and eSIM

Only GPS + Cellular models can take a line. The watch uses an eSIM, so there’s no card to insert; you add the line from the Cellular section of the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, and your carrier has to support it. Some carriers attach the watch to your phone number, others give it its own.

On US Mobile the watch line is $6.50 a month with taxes and fees included. Apple Watch cellular on US Mobile explains how it works, and pairing the watch with an Unlimited plan covers the phone side. To compare every carrier’s price, see the cheapest Apple Watch cellular plans.

Use it with your carrier

Each carrier handles watch lines a little differently: which plans qualify, whether the watch shares your number, and where the setup screen lives. We’ve written carrier-specific guides for:

Kids and family members without an iPhone

Apple Watch For Your Kids (it used to be called Family Setup) lets you set up a GPS + Cellular watch for someone who doesn’t have an iPhone, managed from yours. The watch needs its own line, because it can’t borrow a phone number it doesn’t have.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular

The watch picks its connection on its own: your iPhone over Bluetooth when it’s close, a known Wi-Fi network when it isn’t, and cellular when neither is around (if you have a line). Understanding that order explains most “why is it doing that?” moments.

Battery

Cellular, a bright screen and GPS workouts are the big drains. Low Power Mode stretches a charge a long way when you need it to.

When cellular stops working

Start simple: check that cellular is switched on in Control Center, restart the watch and your iPhone, and make sure the line is still active with your carrier. If that doesn’t do it, our Apple Watch cellular troubleshooting guide goes through the next steps; it’s written for AT&T users, but most of it applies anywhere.

About this guide

US Mobile wrote this guide. Steps reflect how the watch and iPhone setup work at the time of writing; Apple changes menus between watchOS versions, so if a screen looks different, Apple’s own user guide has the current wording. The US Mobile price comes from US Mobile’s plan page, checked 5 October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use my Apple Watch for the first time?

Charge it, turn it on with the side button, then hold it near your iPhone and follow the setup prompts in the Apple Watch app. Once it’s paired, press the Digital Crown to see your apps and swipe on the watch face to change it. Apple’s online user guide covers each app in detail.

How do I put my Apple Watch in pairing mode?

A new or erased Apple Watch is ready to pair as soon as it’s on: hold it near your iPhone and wait for the setup prompt. If nothing appears, open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone and start pairing from there. A watch already paired to another iPhone has to be unpaired or erased first.

How do I add cellular to my Apple Watch?

You need a GPS + Cellular model and a carrier that supports it. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, go to Cellular and choose to set it up; your carrier takes it from there. On US Mobile the watch line costs $6.50 a month with taxes and fees included.

How do I use Apple Pay on my Apple Watch?

Add a card in the Wallet section of the Apple Watch app on your iPhone first. To pay, double-click the side button and hold the watch display near the card reader until you feel a tap. It works without your iPhone nearby, which is handy for runs.

How do I use walkie-talkie on Apple Watch?

Open the Walkie-Talkie app, add a friend from your contacts and wait for them to accept the invitation. Once they have, tap their name, then press and hold the Talk button while you speak. Both of you need an Apple Watch with FaceTime set up.

How do I silence notifications on my Apple Watch?

Press the side button to open Control Center and tap the bell to turn on Silent Mode, which stops sounds but keeps taps. To pause notifications altogether, turn on Do Not Disturb or another Focus from the same screen.

Is there an Apple Watch user guide PDF?

Apple’s official Apple Watch User Guide is online at support.apple.com, organised by topic and updated for each watchOS version. Apple’s Manuals and Downloads page also lists the printed documents for each model. This page covers the carrier, cellular and family setup side that Apple’s guide doesn’t.
