Why 2-Line Math Is Different

Two lines sit in a strange spot. You’ve outgrown a solo plan, but you haven’t reached the line counts where the big carriers start handing out credits. Here’s what that looks like in actual dollars.

The first line carries the bill

The Big 3 charge the most for line one and discount the lines after it. Verizon Unlimited Plus is $80/mo for one line with AutoPay and $140/mo for two ($70 a line). AT&T Extra 2.0 goes from $70/mo to $120/mo ($60 a line). T-Mobile Experience More 2.0 goes from $85/mo to $140/mo. So yes, the second line is cheaper. You’re still north of $100 a month for two phones, though, and that’s before a cent of tax.

The good deals start at line three

Read the fine print and a pattern shows up. Verizon’s $10 account credit, which runs for 36 months with a new smartphone line, needs 3 or more lines. T-Mobile’s “3rd line free” offer makes three lines of Experience More 2.0 cost the same $140/mo as two, paid as bill credits that stop if you cancel any line. AT&T’s limited-time extra $5 off per new line starts at 4 lines. None of it helps a couple.

Flat per-line pricing doesn’t care how many of you there are

US Mobile has no multi-line discount on its Unlimited plans, which sounds like a drawback until you run the numbers at two lines. Each Unlimited Starter line is $25/mo with taxes included, so two are $50/mo. That’s $30 less than two lines of T-Mobile Essentials Saver 2.0 and $40 less than two lines of AT&T Value 2.0, and both of those still add taxes and fees on top.

Sharing data can be cheaper still

If you both live on Wi-Fi most of the day, a shared bucket can beat two unlimited lines. US Mobile Light is $10/mo for one line with 2GB; a second line adds $8, so two lines are $18/mo sharing the 2GB. By the Gig works the same way: two lines are $23/mo sharing 5GB, $28/mo sharing 10GB or $43/mo sharing 20GB, taxes included. Google Fi Flexible is $35/mo for two lines plus $10 for every GB you use, before taxes.

Per-line fees double too

A per-line fee is easy to shrug off on one line. On two, it adds up, and so do the one-time charges for starting service.

Big 3 fees compared, two lines, prices checked October 20, 2026
CarrierTo start two linesMonthly carrier fee, two linesTaxes
US MobileCarrier does not sayIncluded in the priceIncluded
Verizon$80 ($40 activation fee per line)$7.56 ($3.78 a line), rising to $9.38 on November 15, 2026Extra; Verizon says surcharges can add 16% to 58%
AT&T$70 ($35 activation fee per line)Up to $9.98 (up to $4.99 a line)Extra
T-Mobile$70 ($35 device connection charge per line)$10.98 ($5.49 a line), plus government surchargesExtra

Verizon’s administrative charge applies to each voice line. T-Mobile says its government surcharges typically run $0.08 to $4.57 a line on top of the $5.49 fee. So before any tax or government surcharge, two lines on the Big 3 carry $7.56 to $10.98 a month in carrier fees today, and none of it shows up in the headline price.

Streaming perks only count if you’d pay for them anyway

T-Mobile Experience More 2.0 includes Netflix Standard with ads and Apple TV for $3/mo; Experience Beyond 2.0 adds Hulu. Cricket Supreme Unlimited includes HBO Max Basic with Ads. If you already pay for those services, count the value. If you don’t, it’s a nice extra on a pricier plan, not savings. US Mobile’s own subscription perk, worth up to $15/mo, needs three or more monthly Unlimited Premium lines, so a pair doesn’t get it.

How the prices line up. Big 3 postpaid prices need AutoPay to hit the number shown (about $5 to $10 more per line without it), and taxes and fees are added at billing. Prepaid usually includes taxes. US Mobile’s listed rate needs no AutoPay and no commitment, with taxes and fees included. US Mobile plans listed are prepaid; Big 3 plans listed are postpaid. Two US Mobile Unlimited lines are simply twice the one-line price, because there’s no multi-line discount; Light’s second line adds $8.

See US Mobile plans.

US Mobile

Consumer Reports Top Rated

US Mobile is the simplest two-line math in this guide, because on its Unlimited plans each line costs exactly what one line costs. Two Unlimited Starter lines are $50/mo. Two Unlimited Premium lines are $88/mo. Taxes and fees are already in those prices, and there’s no contract.

Every line gets access to all three major US wireless networks, branded as Warp 5G, Dark Star, and Light Speed. For two people, that’s more useful than it sounds: if your days take you to different parts of town, each line can sit on the network that suits the person carrying it, and you can move a line to a different network later from the dashboard. The Multi-Network add-on goes further and puts more than one network on the same phone, at $10/mo per line ($7.50/mo on annual).

Unlimited Premium$44/mo$88/mo$780/yr ($65/mo); $598 for the first year for two new lines, then $780/yrUnlimited on one network

Taxes and fees are included. First-year offers are for new lines, first year only, and renew at the regular yearly price. Unlimited plans have no multi-line discount, so two lines cost twice the one-line price ($270/yr for one Starter line, or $199 for its first year as a new line; $390/yr for Premium, or $299 in year one). Light and By the Gig add $8 for each extra line, and the lines share the data. Right now, porting in with code FBF10 makes Starter $10/mo a line for the first 6 months (then $25), and FBF20 makes Premium $20/mo a line for 6 months (then $44), limit 5 per household. New customers transferring one number to Warp 5G or Dark Star get a 30-day free trial with 30GB; that line then renews on monthly Unlimited Premium unless you change plans.

What each line gets: Unlimited Starter’s high-speed data is unlimited on one of its networks and may slow after 70GB a month on the others, with 20GB of hotspot. Unlimited Premium adds unlimited priority data, unlimited hotspot on one of its networks, 20GB of roaming in 180+ countries, international calling and texting, and a free smartwatch plan on select networks. Unlimited Flex is sold yearly only and may slow after 10GB a month, so it suits someone who rarely tops 10GB.

The tradeoff is the flip side of the flat price: there’s no discount to grow into. Two lines are $50 on Starter, and a third would add another $25. For a couple, though, that’s the line count where flat pricing looks best. Going solo instead? See best phone plans for one.

See US Mobile plans.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile’s lineup is now “2.0”, and two lines of either Experience plan now cost $10 less than our August edition showed. One plan is built for exactly this article: Essentials Saver 2.0 is only offered at 1 or 2 lines, at $80/mo for two with AutoPay.

On top of those prices: taxes, a $5.49-a-line fee, government surcharges and a one-time $35-a-line device connection charge. The Experience plans’ prices for 3 to 5 lines lean on “3rd line free” bill credits, which stop if you cancel any line, so don’t add a third line just because it looks free. See T-Mobile plans. Weighing the big two? See T-Mobile vs Verizon.

Verizon

Verizon’s three myPlan tiers, with the two-line prices Verizon lists. All of them need Auto Pay and paper-free billing to hit these numbers.

Verizon adds a $40 activation fee per line, a $3.78-a-line administrative charge (rising to $4.69 on November 15, 2026) and surcharges it says can add 16% to 58% to your monthly charges. Unlimited Plus and Ultimate include 5G Ultra Wideband; Ultimate also includes international use. Its $10 multi-line account credit starts at 3 lines. See Verizon plans. For how it compares head to head, see AT&T vs Verizon.

AT&T

AT&T’s 2.0 plans, priced for two lines with AutoPay and paperless billing. That AutoPay discount needs a bank account or AT&T’s own card; with a debit card it’s $5 off instead of $10.

AT&T plans, two lines, prices checked October 20, 2026

Plus taxes, a fee of up to $4.99 a line and a $35 activation fee per line. Value 2.0 is the cheap one, but only 5GB of each line’s data is full speed, and two people streaming on the go can burn through that fast. See AT&T plans. Comparing it with a budget brand? See AT&T vs Visible.

Google Fi

Google Fi’s step-down pricing is gentler than the Big 3’s. Two lines of Unlimited Essentials are $60/mo ($30 a line, 30GB of high-speed data each, no hotspot). Unlimited Standard is $80/mo for two ($40 a line) with 25GB of hotspot and data, calls and texts in Canada and Mexico. Unlimited Premium is $110/mo for two ($55 a line) with 50GB of hotspot, 50GB of high-speed data in 200+ destinations and free calls from the US to 50+.

If you both use very little data, Fi Flexible is $35/mo for two lines plus $10 for every GB you use. Taxes and surcharges are extra on every Fi plan; Fi says they normally run 10 to 20 percent. There are no activation or cancellation fees. See Google Fi plans.

Spectrum Mobile

Two lines of Spectrum Mobile Unlimited are $60/mo, but only if you already have Spectrum Internet and pay by AutoPay. Spectrum’s plan card says $30 a line; its FAQ puts a single line on its own at $40. Unlimited includes 30GB of premium data and 5GB of hotspot per line, and new customers get the first line free for a year before it goes to the regular rate.

Unlimited Plus is $40 a line with 10GB of hotspot and use in 215+ countries and destinations. Activation is extra and taxes may apply; Spectrum doesn’t state the amounts. See Spectrum Mobile plans.

Metro by T-Mobile

Metro’s three current unlimited plans all include taxes and fees and come with a 5-year price guarantee. Activation is free online and $25 a line in a store.

Two-line totals are from Metro’s Broadband Facts labels, before the AutoPay discount. The web-only plan can slow past 35GB a month when the network is busy, and Unlimited 5G Data past 50GB.

See Metro plans.

Cricket Wireless

Cricket runs on AT&T’s network and folds taxes and fees into its prices. With AutoPay, two lines of Select Unlimited are $65/mo, Smart Unlimited $75/mo and Supreme Unlimited $90/mo. Supreme is the one to look at if you want a real hotspot: 50GB, plus HBO Max Basic with Ads and 150GB of cloud storage. Select has no hotspot unless you add it, and video is limited to SD on Select and Smart (Cricket says it may be on Supreme too).

Two catches for couples: every line on the account has to be on the same plan, and there’s a $25 activation fee in Cricket stores. See Cricket plans.

Other 2-Line Plans Worth Considering

Visible

On Verizon’s network with taxes included: Visible is $25/mo a line, Visible+ $35 and Visible+ Pro $45, with unlimited hotspot capped at 5, 10 and 15 Mbps. Visible’s own two-line pricing isn’t something we recorded this month, so check Visible before you count on a group deal. Visible plans. More in Mint Mobile vs Visible.

Total Wireless

On Verizon’s network, taxes included, with a 5-year price guarantee. With Auto Pay, two lines of Total Starter are $75/mo, Total MAX 5G $80/mo and Total All Access $90/mo. The $5 Auto Pay discount starts in month two and is one per account, not per line. Total Wireless plans.

Optimum Mobile

Unlimited is $60/mo for two lines (20GB of premium data, 5GB of hotspot) and Unlimited Max $80/mo for two (50GB, 15GB of hotspot). Optimum’s plan page doesn’t say Optimum Internet is required, and it advertises a $20-a-month internet credit when you add Mobile. Prices assume good credit and exclude taxes. Optimum Mobile plans.

Xfinity Mobile

Needs Xfinity Internet. Mobile Select is $30/mo a line with 15GB of hotspot and Mobile Plus $45/mo a line with 50GB; new customers get the first line for $0 (Select) or $15 (Plus) for the first year. There’s a $25 activation fee per line, covered on a first order through 10/30, and taxes are extra. Xfinity Mobile plans.

Straight Talk

Two lines of Silver Unlimited are $75/mo, Gold Unlimited $95/mo and Platinum Unlimited $115/mo, before taxes. The Auto Pay discount only lasts the first 3 months. Straight Talk plans.

Boost Mobile

With autopay, two lines of Unlimited+ are $80/mo and two lines of Unlimited Premium $100/mo, as long as every line is on one of those two plans. Boost says taxes and fees are extra on Unlimited Premium. Boost plans.

Consumer Cellular

Unlimited 50+ is $60/mo for two lines with the $5 AutoPay and eBilling credit, for account holders 50 and older. Speeds drop after 50GB on multi-line accounts. Taxes are extra, plus a $10 activation fee per line and a monthly operational compliance fee. More options in our senior phone plans guide. Consumer Cellular plans.

These comparisons cross the prepaid/postpaid line: US Mobile plans listed are prepaid; Big 3 plans listed are postpaid.

The real gap is wider than the table shows, since the Big 3 side still owes taxes and per-line fees. With US Mobile’s first-year yearly offers for new lines, the savings are even larger in year one.

How We Evaluated These 2-Line Phone Plans

US Mobile wrote this comparison, and it’s in it. Every price here was read on the carrier’s own plan pages or FCC Broadband Facts labels on , and we saved screenshots of those pages. Two-line prices are the carriers’ own stated totals for two lines, with AutoPay where the carrier’s price needs it. US Mobile’s Unlimited plans have no multi-line discount, so their two-line price is twice the one-line price. Where a carrier doesn’t publish something, we say “Carrier does not say” rather than guess.

For two lines specifically, we weighted: the total monthly cost at two lines, what each line actually gets (high-speed data, hotspot, data priority), per-line fees and one-time charges, and the extras couples tend to use, like international roaming, streaming and home internet bundles. Savings comparisons match tiers. We don’t rate network speed or coverage ourselves. For customer ratings, see Consumer Reports (Consumer Reports does not endorse products or services), and for speed and coverage, independent sources include Ookla’s Speedtest reports and Opensignal. The FCC’s wireless consumer guides explain your rights as a customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best cell phone plans for 2 lines in 2026?

For most couples, US Mobile Unlimited Starter: $50/mo for two lines with taxes included, 20GB of hotspot on each line and access to all three major US wireless networks. Unlimited Premium is $88/mo for two. US Mobile is named a Consumer Reports Top Rated Cell Phone Service Provider. See the full ratings. Consumer Reports does not endorse products or services.

What’s the cheapest phone plan for 2 lines?

It depends on your data. US Mobile Light is $18/mo for two lines sharing 2GB, taxes included. For unlimited data, two Unlimited Starter lines are $50/mo, or two yearly Unlimited Flex lines are $420 a year ($35/mo), with slower speeds possible after 10GB a month. Without an age limit, the lowest Big 3 price is T-Mobile Essentials Saver 2.0 at $80/mo with AutoPay.

Do Big 3 family discounts apply at 2 lines?

Yes, but they’re modest. Verizon Unlimited Plus is $80/mo for one line and $140/mo for two with AutoPay, then $45 a line at four. AT&T Extra 2.0 goes from $70/mo for one to $120/mo for two, and $40 a line at four. Several extra deals, like Verizon’s $10 account credit and T-Mobile’s “3rd line free”, need three or more lines.

Can each line on a 2-line plan use a different network?

On US Mobile, yes. Every line gets access to all three major US wireless networks, branded as Warp 5G, Dark Star, and Light Speed, so each of you can use the one that suits where you live and work, and move a line to a different network later. The Multi-Network add-on, $10/mo per line, puts more than one network on the same phone.

Usually, but what the second line costs varies. On US Mobile Unlimited it costs the same as the first; on Light and By the Gig it adds $8 and shares the data. On Verizon Unlimited Plus, the bill goes from $80/mo to $140/mo with AutoPay, plus a $40 activation fee. AT&T and T-Mobile charge $35 a line to start.
