Why Not — and What Still Works
The limitation isn’t the watch. It’s the plan. An Apple Watch line is attached to your carrier’s home network, and most carriers don’t extend watch lines to international roaming the way they do phone lines. The watch can’t fall back to a local network on its own either, because you can’t just swap a local SIM into it.
What you keep when you travel is most of what you actually use:
- Everything works while your iPhone is with you. The watch connects over Bluetooth, and calls, messages and notifications come through as normal — including on your iPhone’s international roaming.
- Wi-Fi works anywhere. Connect the watch to hotel or café Wi-Fi and messages, apps and Apple services all function without your phone nearby.
